FDLRS-UM Training
Training delivered by FDLRS-UM MDC to both district personnel, child welfare providers, behavioral health and treatment facilities and other community agencies targets the impact of risk factors, including child maltreatment on student outcomes and teaches strategies to support students and their families. Community providers working in child welfare have an expressed need for more understanding of the developmental and behavioral impact of child maltreatment, parental substance abuse and out of home placements of students, and the high prevalence rates of these students being placed in special education programs. Child welfare professionals can better assist families with choosing meaningful services and family supports to improve student outcome with proper training, which includes follow-up coaching and mentoring by FDLRS-UM team. High personnel turn-over rates for professionals and judges working with foster children require that trainings be reoccurring annually. Creative strategies provide mechanisms to increase positive parent involvement with their students and with their children’s teachers.
